Job Description

Overall Responsibility

Reporting to the Vice President of Operations, the EHS Director will have direct responsibility for his/her home site in addition to responsibility for the efforts to plan, develop and coordinate environmental, health & safety (EHS) compliance and other programs that result in exceptional EH&S performance in manufacturing and support operations across all of the company plants. Site EHS personnel will report dotted-line to the EHS Director. The EHS function is responsible to provide the road map for continuous improvements and consistent compliance with safety & environmental practices across the company business with an emphasis on Risk Assessment and Behavior-Based safety systems.

Essential Job Duties

  • Develops the plan to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes and rules. Executes follow up measures to document compliance and address any deficiencies.
  • Works closely with each site’s EH&S representatives to develop and maintain safety and environmental systems, policies, and procedures and to help identify potential problems; works with site management to develop solutions.
  • Accountable for ensuring we have incident reporting accuracy and effectiveness throughout the business unit. This includes company required, government, agency and other reporting.

  • Insures procedures are developed and in place to inspect facilities, machinery and equipment as well as ensuring personnel practices to identify potential safety and health concerns and hazards.Ensures training gaps are identified and develops training materials/programs designed to address the concern.
  • Ensures the EHS team trains employees and management in safe practices including: hazard communications, bloodborne pathogens, respirator use, lock-out/tag-out, forklift operations, hot work, confined space, fire protections, site evacuation, contractor safety and safe lifting.
  • Ensures proper accident investigation procedures and recommendations to prevent reoccurrence
  • Acts as Company representative in dealing with government agencies on safety, health and environmental matters affecting the site.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all waste streams are properly classified and handled.
  • Ensures that EH&S standards are met by all onsite contract services.
  • Provides information to top management on accidents, causes, and costs and recommends long-range accident reduction and cost containment objectives.
  • Coordinates activities with local fire departments and other government/civic functions on inspection of facilities.
  • Ensure safe operation, modification and installation of equipment within assigned facility.
  • Provides oversight to all locations to ensure every location is meeting the above requirements.

Desired Experience & Education

  • Industry Experience 7 years minimum experience in EH&S in a manufacturing setting required. Strong technical EH&S knowledge required (OSHA certifications required).
  • Leadership Experience: Proven track record of creating a compelling safety culture in a large organization. Must be a dynamic change agent who can inspire change and create accountability mechanisms to make those changes a reality. Must be strong in data management and metrics with a results driven approach.
  • Key competencies: Decisive, compelling leadership vision & proven execution in a large scale organization, working independently. Must be customer centric with strong collaboration and communication skills (both written and verbal). Must possess advanced critical thinking, problem solving skills, team leadership and participation. Ability to use ERP systems and Microsoft Office programs effectively. Continuous Improvement skills and experience is essential.
