Job Description:

As the Hardware Engineering Team Lead, you will have the opportunity to build and develop a team of diverse engineers, help shape product strategy and capabilities for the organization, identify and develop new business opportunities, and directly contribute as a Project Leader on multiple innovative technical projects. You will manage a team of up to 10 engineers supporting a broad range of programs and projects. Management responsibilities will include performance reviews, recruiting, staff development, program staffing, and infrastructure development (workshop space, software tools, etc.). 

You will contribute to and lead engineering tasks on one or multiple projects. You should have depth in hardware product development and technology evaluation, including concept generation, design and drafting, analysis (first-principles and computer modeling), prototyping, testing, verification, and transition to manufacturing partners. You should be capable of effectively leading multi-disciplinary teams consisting of electrical, mechanical, software and systems engineers. Familiarity with basic software development principles will be essential. 

In addition, you will collaborate with customers and stakeholders (internal and external to Shell), vendors in the supply chain, subcontractors, Shell TechWorks project teams, and end users to identify problems and propose valid technical solutions. This will include partnering closely with internal staff to produce technical proposals that include cost and schedule projections. You will also be responsible for ensuring a healthy, safe, secure, and environmentally-conscious work environment is maintained at all times by all staff, in compliance with corporate policies and federal and state regulations.

Recent design examples…

· Prototyping of complex carbon capture system with potential to revolutionize emissions management for the energy industry

· Hardware design(s) for an EV charger to de-risk development with 3rd party contract manufacturer

· Proof-of-concept of a safety critical wireless communication system used in hydrogen refueling

· Pressure/temperature data acquisition system with Bluetooth connectivity used to perform hydrostatic testing during plant construction

· Proof-of-concept for a corrosion under insulation condition monitor

· Contributed to systems design of a hydrogen refueling dispenser

· Design of a data access module to connect equipment at hydrogen refueling stations to the internet

Desired Skills and Experience:

· Bachelor’s Degree in electrical and/or mechanical engineering, Master’s preferrred

· Technical leadership and management experience demonstrating the ability to:

o Manage multiple direct reports

o Lead technical teams with varying backgrounds and skill sets

o Build a cohesive team and grow team members according to their personal goals

o Develop industry and academic contacts and create a continuing education program to ensure staff are up to date

· At least 7 years of experience developing complex hardware systems with several of the following elements

o Thorough understanding of 1 st principle mechanical design practise for various design elements (shafts, structures, pipes, flanges, bolted joint, gears, valves, fans, motors)

o Experience in design for manufacturing and material selection, heat treatment, TSU, GD&T

o Demonstrated ability to produce innovative solutions to challenging problems

o Demonstrated experience designing gantries, guide rails, belt/rack pinion drive assembly.

o Experience in component level design, verification & validation, field deployment, root cause analysis, NDT inspection, failure mitigation of mechanical components

o Ability to think system level to quickly identify problems and implement solutions

o Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, ProE, etc.)

· Proficient level technical background in several of the following areas:

o Structural mechanics, machine design

o Thermodynamics and fluid dynamics

o Manufacturing drawings, GD&T

o Finite Element Analysis (FEA): linear/non-linear structural, thermal, dynamic

o Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): steady/transient, thermal, fluid-structure coupling

o Electromechanical sensors (accelerometers, gyros, etc.)

o Pressure vessel design, analysis, certification

o Designing embedded hardware systems, ideally including experience with wireless communication protocols, such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Zigbee, or LoRa, and integrating them into embedded systems

o Digital and/or analog design

o Hardware/firmware interaction (timing, voltage levels, etc.)

· Experience with several the following tools is a significant asset

o MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape

o Schematic capture and board layout tools (Altium preferred)

o 1D System analysis (Modellica, Anylogic, AmeSim, GT-Suite etc.,)

o FEA (Ansys, Nastran, etc.)

o CFD (STAR-CCM+, ANSYS Fluent/CFX, etc.)

o PLM (Omnify, Agile, Windchill, etc.)

o Microsoft Project

o Programming languages (Python, VBA, etc.)

· Experience in a start-up technology company is preferred
