Job Description

SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing aid to ophthalmologists by obtaining medical records, performing preliminary eye function testing and explaining to patients about medication or procedures. Work closely with an ophthalmologist, gathering patient information necessary to complete a diagnosis. Assistants often see the patient before the ophthalmologist and are often responsible for preparing the patient for the exam and beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements.

This position will require some travel to Fayetteville on a weekly basis.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

1. Gather medical records and patient information
2. Take ocular measurements, both anatomical and functional
3. Administer or prepare medications
4. Provide eye care and contact lens information to the patient
5. Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments
6. Assist the ophthalmologist in basic procedures
7. Review patient charts prior to exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be needed
8. Document exam findings correctly in patient charts as dictated by the doctor
9. Ensure fee slips are correctly marked with proper modifiers
10. Code patient visits in EyeMD for insurance
11. Able to perform diagnostic testing when needed
12. Perform a variety of clinical tasks (IOP check, install drops into patient's eyes if needed)
13. Instruct patients with verbal and written instructions regarding any medications and treatments
14. Answer patient questions and make follow up phone calls when needed
15. Take Triage Calls and send over medication refills
16. Assist doctor with minor surgical procedures
17. Clean and sterilize equipment
18. Maintain patient confidentiality
19. Other duties as assigned

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. One year experience in an ophthalmology setting
2. High school diploma (or GED) required
3. Certification by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
4. Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye
5. Knowledge of ultrasound and visual field machines
6. Problem solver with analytical skills
7. Personable and empathetic toward patient's needs and concerns
8. Well-organized with attention to detail
