Senior Underwriter

ABA Insurance Services Inc., a division of Great American, has been a long-term, stable source of insurance for banks since 1987, offering Professional Liability Products, Financial Institution Bond, Cyber, and Property & Casualty coverages. The bank program is a unique, market-leading insurance solution for financial institutions, recognized for its underwriting and claims expertise, and endorsed by the American Bankers Association and 34 state bankers' associations.

ABA Insurance Services is searching for a Senior Underwriter to join our Property & Casualty team. This individual will be underwriting both new and renewal business for financial institutions. This job offers a hybrid work opportunity for individuals who are in the Shaker Heights, OH area. We are also open to remote employees with the expectation of visiting the office 4-6 times a year.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives.
  • Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
  • Maintains a high level of customer service.
  • Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer.
  • Prices business in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
  • Orders and screens miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, such as Motor Vehicle reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections, loss control, etc.
  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
  • Develops relationships with agents & brokers through telephone interactions.
  • Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • May provide guidance and assistance to lower level positions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in Business, Liberal Arts or a related discipline.
  • Generally, 3 to 6 years of related experience in P&C Commercial lines. Open to candidates with 6-10 years of experience.
  • Progression toward certification in area of expertise preferred; appropriate certifications could include Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS) or Associate of Risk Management (ARM).
  • P&C Insurance License preferred, but not required for hire. Candidates must get their P&C license within their first 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time.
  • Experience with Microsoft products such as Excel and Word.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Scope of Job/Qualifications: Performs work under general supervision and technical direction. Familiar with moderately complex concepts, practices and procedures. Works with authority on assignments of moderate technical complexity. Maintains strong knowledge of company policies and industry laws and regulations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrates strong analytical skills with attention to detail. Strong negotiation and decision-making ability. Position requires occasional travel.
