Vice Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs
McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) seeks a dynamic, strategic, and visionary leader to serve as Vice Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs. This senior leadership position is integral to the overall medical student experience, from the admissions process to supporting students through graduation. The Vice Dean will oversee admissions, student affairs, career advising, academic support, and wellness initiatives, ensuring that all services align with the school’s mission of fostering the development of compassionate and innovative healthcare professionals. Founded in 1969, McGovern Medical School (MMS) has over 2,000 faculty members and currently enrolls 960 students, and over 1,000 residents and fellows. The medical school is affiliated with several major hospitals throughout Houston. MMS is fully accredited by the LCME. The Vice Dean provides strategic planning, vision, and direction for all admissions and student affairs aspects. The Vice Dean will oversee the admissions process for the medical school, ensuring a fair, transparent, and holistic selection process. The Vice Dean will lead initiatives to enhance the student experience, focusing on academic advising, career development, student wellness, and engagement. They will promote a student-centered culture that supports students’ well-being, mental health, and professional development.
The Vice Dean will oversee academic and social support for medical students and ensure the formation and implementation of initiatives that foster educational and professional success in a student-centered learning environment. The Vice Dean will have oversight of accreditation reports, completion of NBME licensing examinations, delivery of formative events and ceremonies of undergraduate medical education, and the promotion of students to the next educational level and ultimately, degree completion/graduation.
Qualifications - External
The successful candidate will have at least five years of leadership experience with direct participation in undergraduate medical education and student affairs, a strong record as a superior clinician-educator, demonstrated collaborative leadership skills, commitment to excellence and innovation, knowledge of contemporary medical education issues, and excellent communication skills with the ability to inspire teams and individuals.
Candidates must possess an MD or equivalent terminal degree and academic experience consistent with eligibility for appointment at the rank of Full Professor at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.
